September marks the National Recovery Month. National Recovery Month was launched in 1989 and its goal is to raise awareness about substance use disorder and co-occurring disorders, promote and support new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, and to reduce stigma surrounding substance use disorder.
National Recovery Month celebrates the nation’s strong and proud recovery community and the gains made by those in recovery. The goal is to spread the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, prevention works, treatment is effective, and people can and do recover.
The Haven wants to join our colleagues and fellow service providers in educating the public about recovery, how it works, for whom, and why. We know that the road to recovery can be difficult, but the benefits of preventing and overcoming substance use disorders are significant and valuable not just to individuals, but to families and communities as well. As the White House states in its National Recovery Month proclamation, “When our fellow Americans recover from substance use disorder, our Nation becomes stronger and more resilient.”
More than 20 million Americans are recovering from substance use disorder and the issue impacts all communities across the U.S. The Haven is committed to advancing health equity and providing high quality care to all our clients. We firmly believe that everybody should have access to behavioral health services no matter who they are or where they live. In the spirit of the Recovery Month’s tagline “Every Person. Every Family. Every Community.”, recovery truly is possible for everybody.
